How to Wash Down Pillows
Surprisingly, down pillows can also be machine washed. Follow the same instructions as above, but remember that hot temperatures can damage the down filling. Use cold water instead of hot, and set the dryer to the no-heat, air-fluff setting when drying.
How to Wash Foam Pillows
Foam pillows shouldn’t go in the washing machine, but they are less prone to allergens, mildew, and dust mites. To clean foam pillows:
Baking Soda: Sprinkle baking soda on the pillow and let it sit for about 30 minutes before vacuuming it up with a hand attachment.
Spot Clean: For stains, use a mixture of one teaspoon of mild laundry detergent and two cups of warm water. Apply the mixture to the stain, scrub with a cloth, then blot away the soap and moisture with a clean, damp cloth.
How Often to Wash Pillows
Pillows should be washed at least every six months. If you don’t use a pillow liner or are sensitive to allergens, consider washing them every three to four months.
Tips for Washing Your Pillows
Stain Removal: Use a stain pretreat product for stubborn stains before washing.
Odor Removal: Add a cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle to eliminate musty smells from your pillow.
Complete Drying: Ensure the pillows are completely dry before removing them from the dryer to prevent mildew.
Replacement: Pillows used daily should be replaced every 18 months.
By following these tips, you can keep your pillows fresh, clean, and allergen-free!
