Introduction
Indian frybread is a beloved comfort food with deep cultural roots, especially among Native American communities. Its golden, crispy texture and warm, fluffy interior have made it a versatile dish enjoyed in various forms across North America. Whether served with savory toppings like chili or sweetened with powdered sugar, frybread is a simple yet satisfying treat. In this recipe, we’ll explore how to make this cherished bread at home, with tips for achieving the perfect texture and flavor.
Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
¾ cup water (adjust as needed)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for the dough)
Vegetable oil (for frying)
Directions:
Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if using). Stir the dry ingredients together until evenly distributed.
Add Wet Ingredients: Create a well in the center of the dry mixture. Pour in 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and gradually add the water, stirring as you go. Start with ¾ cup of water, and add a little more if needed until the dough comes together. It should be soft but not too sticky.
Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 2-3 minutes, until smooth. Cover the dough with a clean cloth or plastic wrap and let it rest for 15-20 minutes.
Shape the Frybread: Divide the dough into 6-8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and then flatten it with your fingers or a rolling pin to about ½ inch thick. If you prefer smaller frybread pieces, you can make them more compact.
Fry the Bread: Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep frying pan over medium heat. To test if the oil is ready, drop a small piece of dough into it — if it sizzles and rises to the surface, the oil is hot enough.
Fry and Drain: Carefully place one piece of dough into the hot oil. Fry for about 1-2 minutes on each side or until golden brown and puffed. Use tongs to turn the bread and ensure it’s evenly cooked. Once done, remove the frybread and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
Serve: Enjoy the frybread warm, as is, or top it with your favorite fillings.
