Sizzling Patty Melt: A Comfort Food Classic with a Twist

Introduction:
The Patty Melt is a classic American diner dish that combines the deliciousness of a juicy beef patty with the comforting flavors of a grilled cheese sandwich. It's a perfect hybrid, with the savory goodness of a hamburger, sandwiched between two slices of buttery, crispy bread, and layered with melted cheese and caramelized onions. Whether you're making it for a quick lunch or a hearty dinner, this recipe brings the best of both worlds together in every bite. Let’s dive into how you can make this savory delight at home!

Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
1 small onion, thinly sliced
4 slices rye bread (or bread of your choice)
4 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar for a twist)
2 tablespoons butter (for grilling)
1 tablespoon olive oil (for caramelizing onions)
1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional, for extra flavor)
Salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
Prepare the onions: Heat olive oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and caramelized, about 10–15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, and if you like, add a bit of Worcestershire sauce or garlic powder for an extra depth of flavor. Once done, remove the onions from the skillet and set them aside.

Form the patties: While the onions cook, divide the ground beef into 2 equal portions and shape them into patties that are slightly larger than your bread slices. Season the patties with salt and pepper.

Cook the patties: In the same skillet (or a separate pan), cook the patties over medium-high heat for about 4–5 minutes on each side or until they reach your desired level of doneness.

Assemble the Patty Melt: Once the patties are cooked, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and allow it to melt slightly. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.

Butter one side of each slice of bread. Place the buttered side down in the skillet. On the unbuttered side, layer some of the caramelized onions and then add the patty with melted cheese. Top with another slice of bread, buttered side up.

Grill the sandwich: Grill the assembled sandwich on medium heat for 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is completely melted.

Serve and enjoy: Remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot.
