Ingredients:
For the Apple Filling:
8 cups of apples (about 6 medium-sized, peeled, cored, and sliced)
2 tablespoons lemon juice
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (to help thicken the filling)
1/4 teaspoon salt
For the Crisp Topping:
1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
1/2 cup chopped nuts (such as pecans or walnuts, optional)
Directions:
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
Prepare the Apple Filling: In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice to prevent browning. Add granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and salt, mixing until all the apples are evenly coated. Transfer the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.
Make the Crisp Topping: In another bowl, combine rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the cold butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. If desired, fold in chopped nuts for added crunch and flavor.
Assemble and Bake: Evenly sprinkle the oat topping over the apple mixture. Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork. You may want to cover the dish with aluminum foil during the first 30 minutes of baking to prevent over-browning, then remove it for the last 15–20 minutes to allow the top to crisp up.
Cool and Serve: Once done, remove from the oven and let the apple crisp cool slightly. The filling will continue to thicken as it cools, making it easier to serve.
