Introduction
When you run out of gas while cooking, it can be frustrating and inconvenient. While gas cylinders have a gauge to show the remaining gas, not all of them are accurate or easy to read. Fortunately, there’s a simple homemade trick to check how much gas is left in your cylinder. This method requires no special equipment and can save you from running into an unexpected shortage of gas mid-recipe. Whether you're cooking at home or planning a big meal, knowing how much gas is left can make a difference.
Ingredients:
A gas cylinder
Cold water
A clean cloth or towel
A small bucket or container
Directions:
Turn off the gas supply: Before beginning, ensure that your gas cylinder is turned off for safety.
Fill a bucket with cold water: Take a container or bucket and fill it with cold water. The colder, the better. This will enhance the effectiveness of the trick.
Wet the gas cylinder: Using the clean cloth or towel, apply a small amount of the cold water to the surface of the gas cylinder. You don’t need to soak it completely; just a light application will do.
Check for temperature change: Run your hand along the gas cylinder. The upper part of the cylinder will feel warmer, while the lower part, where the liquid gas is stored, will feel cooler. This is because gas turns to liquid under pressure, and the liquid phase stays cooler than the empty part of the cylinder.
Mark the level: Once you've identified where the gas line ends (by feeling the difference in temperature), mark that level with a piece of tape or a marker. This is where the liquid gas ends and the empty space begins.
Check frequently: Repeating this test every few weeks will give you an idea of how much gas is remaining in your cylinder.
Serving and Storage Tips:
Store your gas cylinder in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and extreme heat.
Always turn off the gas after use to prevent leaks.
If you are planning on running low on gas soon, keep a spare cylinder ready to avoid any cooking disruptions.
