Introduction: Focaccia is a beloved, rustic Italian bread that is known for its crispy exterior and soft, airy interior. With its versatility, it can be enjoyed as a snack, side dish, or even a light meal. But why not elevate your classic focaccia by incorporating a creamy twist? Focaccia with cream cheese offers a delectable contrast between the warm, fluffy bread and the rich, smooth cream cheese, creating a harmonious blend of flavors. Whether you’re baking it for a casual meal or serving it at a special gathering, this unique twist on focaccia will become a new favorite!
Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
1 tsp sugar
¾ cup warm water (about 110°F)
2 tbsp olive oil (plus more for drizzling)
1 tsp salt
4 oz cream cheese, softened
1 tsp garlic powder
Fresh rosemary sprigs (optional, for garnish)
Coarse sea salt (optional, for sprinkling)
Instructions:
Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy.
Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir to combine, then knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
Shape the Focaccia: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently, and transfer it to a greased baking sheet. Stretch and press the dough to fit the size of the sheet, about ½-inch thick.
Cream Cheese Layer: In a small bowl, mix the softened cream cheese with garlic powder until smooth. Spread a thin layer of the cream cheese mixture evenly across the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
Second Rise: Cover the focaccia with a cloth and let it rise for another 20-30 minutes.
Bake: Drizzle olive oil over the top of the dough and sprinkle with fresh rosemary and coarse sea salt (optional). Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the focaccia turns golden brown and crispy on top.
Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and allow the focaccia to cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm.
Serving and Storage Tips:
Serving: Focaccia with cream cheese is best enjoyed warm. Slice it into squares or strips and serve as an appetizer, side dish, or snack. It pairs well with salads, soups, or charcuterie boards.
Storage: To store, wrap the focaccia in plastic wrap or foil and keep it in an airtight container. It can stay fresh for up to 2-3 days at room temperature. For longer storage, slice it and freeze it for up to 1 month. Reheat in the oven for a few minutes before serving.
