Introduction
Faworki, also known as Angel Wings, are a beloved Polish dessert that has a delicate, crisp texture with a subtle sweetness. These golden, flaky pastries are traditionally enjoyed during the carnival season, but they are so delicious that they can be savored year-round. Whether you’re a fan of crispy treats or looking for something new to bake, Faworki is sure to become a favorite in your kitchen.
Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
1/4 cup sour cream
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon vodka (optional, helps with crispness)
1/4 cup butter (softened)
Powdered sugar for dusting
Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions:
Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and vanilla extract. Add the eggs, sour cream, butter, and vodka (if using) to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms. Knead for about 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour as needed.
Rest the dough: Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it rest for at least 30 minutes. This will help it become more pliable for rolling out.
Roll out the dough: After resting, divide the dough into small portions. Roll each portion out on a lightly floured surface into a thin sheet (about 1/8 inch thick).
Cut into strips: Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, slice the dough into strips (around 1 inch wide and 3 inches long). Make a small slit in the center of each strip and pull one end through to form a twisted shape.
Fry the Faworki: Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot (around 350°F), carefully fry the dough twists in batches. Fry them for 1-2 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy. Remove them from the oil and drain them on paper towels.
Dust with powdered sugar: While the Faworki are still warm, dust them generously with powdered sugar.
Serving and Storage Tips:
Serving: Serve Faworki fresh out of the fryer for the best crispy texture. These pastries pair wonderfully with a cup of coffee or tea.
Storage: To keep Faworki crisp, store them in an airtight container at room temperature. They can stay fresh for about 3-4 days. If they begin to lose their crunch, you can reheat them in the oven at 350°F for a few minutes.
