Introduction
Your bed pillows are not only essential for a good night’s sleep, but they can also accumulate dirt, dust, sweat, and oils over time. Regular pillow cleaning is key to keeping them soft, white, and smelling fresh. Fortunately, cleaning your pillows is easier than you might think, and with a few simple techniques, you can restore them to their pristine condition. In this article, we’ll walk you through the best methods to clean your pillows, ensuring they stay fresh, white, and inviting!
Ingredients
Mild liquid detergent (preferably free from harsh chemicals)
Baking soda
White vinegar
Hot water
A washing machine or bathtub
Optional: Essential oils (lavender or eucalyptus for a fresh scent)
Instructions
Check the Label
Before you begin, check your pillows' care instructions. Some may be machine washable, while others may require special care (e.g., dry cleaning).
Prep Your Pillow
Take off the pillowcase and pillow protector. If your pillow is particularly dirty or stained, sprinkle a small amount of baking soda over the surface to help lift stains and odors. Let it sit for about 15 minutes.
Washing Machine Method
For machine-washable pillows, place them in the washing machine, ensuring the load is balanced.
Add a small amount of liquid detergent, about half of what you would use for a regular load. For added freshness, you can add ½ cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle to neutralize odors.
Wash on a gentle cycle with hot water.
Hand Washing (for delicate pillows)
If you have delicate pillows, fill a bathtub or large basin with warm water and mild detergent. Let the pillow soak for about 10–15 minutes. Gently knead and squeeze the pillow to lift any dirt. Rinse thoroughly with cool water.
Drying
After washing, ensure the pillow is well-rinsed to remove all detergent.
Tumble dry your pillow on low heat with a few clean tennis balls or dryer balls to help fluff it up. Alternatively, air-dry it in a well-ventilated area, but be sure to fluff it occasionally during drying.
For extra softness, you can add a few drops of essential oil on a dryer sheet or directly on the pillow while drying.
Serving and Storage Tips
Once dry, fluff your pillows to maintain their shape and ensure they are completely dry before using them again.
To preserve the freshness, store your pillows in a cool, dry place, preferably in a breathable pillow protector or case.
Regularly clean your pillows every 3 to 6 months to maintain their cleanliness, smell, and shape.
