Introduction
Lemon jam is a refreshing and tangy spread that adds a burst of citrus flavor to your morning toast, pastries, or even desserts. Unlike traditional fruit jams, lemon jam offers a unique tartness balanced by its natural sweetness, making it a perfect addition to your kitchen pantry. This easy and quick recipe allows you to create a delicious homemade lemon jam in no time, with just a few simple ingredients. Whether you're a jam enthusiast or new to making preserves, this lemon jam will quickly become a favorite in your home.
Ingredients
4-5 medium lemons (preferably organic)
400 g (2 cups) of sugar
250 ml (1 cup) of water
1 tablespoon of lemon juice (optional, for extra tanginess)
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional, for added flavor)
Instructions
Prepare the lemons:
Start by washing the lemons thoroughly. Slice them in half and remove any seeds. Cut the lemons into thin slices, keeping the rind on, as it will add flavor and pectin to the jam. If you prefer a smoother jam, you can chop the lemon slices into smaller pieces.
Cook the lemons:
Place the lemon slices in a medium saucepan and add the water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes until the lemons soften. Stir occasionally.
Add the sugar:
Once the lemons have softened, add the sugar to the saucepan and stir until it dissolves completely. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens, which may take around 25-30 minutes. Be sure to check the consistency by placing a small amount of jam on a cold plate — it should set when cooled.
Optional flavor additions:
If you'd like, add a tablespoon of lemon juice for extra tang or vanilla extract to enhance the flavor. Stir well to combine.
Blend for smoothness (optional):
If you prefer a smoother texture, you can use an immersion blender or transfer the jam to a blender to puree it. Blend until smooth or leave it slightly chunky, depending on your preference.
Cool and jar:
Once the jam has thickened to your liking, remove it from the heat. Let it cool for a few minutes before transferring it to sterilized jars. Seal the jars tightly while the jam is still warm and let it cool completely before storing.
Serving and Storage Tips
Serving:
Homemade lemon jam is perfect for spreading on toast, pancakes, or croissants. You can also use it as a filling for pastries, cakes, or as a topping for yogurt and ice cream for a refreshing twist. It also makes a great addition to cheese boards.
Storage:
Store the jam in an airtight container or jar in a cool, dark place. Once opened, it should be kept in the refrigerator, where it will stay fresh for up to 2-3 weeks. If you’ve made a large batch, you can also freeze it in small portions for longer storage.
