How to Restore Old, Yellowed Towels: A Simple Guide to Whiten and Soften Them

Introduction
Nothing feels quite as luxurious as stepping out of the shower and drying off with a soft, fluffy towel. However, over time, towels can lose their bright, fresh appearance, often turning yellow or becoming stiff and rough. The good news is that you don’t have to toss them out just yet. With a few simple ingredients and techniques, you can restore your old, yellowed towels to their former softness and brightness, making them feel as good as new!

Ingredients:

1 cup of baking soda

1 cup of white vinegar

1/2 cup of oxygen bleach (like OxiClean)

1 tablespoon of liquid dish detergent

Hot water

A clean, large bathtub or washing machine

Directions:

Prepare the Solution
If you're using a washing machine, fill it with hot water and add 1 cup of baking soda, 1 cup of white vinegar, and 1/2 cup of oxygen bleach. Stir the mixture to ensure it dissolves evenly. If you're using a bathtub, fill it with hot water enough to submerge your towels, and then add the same ingredients. The combination of vinegar and baking soda will help lift stains, while the oxygen bleach tackles the yellowing.

Soak the Towels
Submerge your yellowed towels in the solution and let them soak for at least 2 hours. If possible, gently agitate the towels every 30 minutes to help break down any grime and restore their softness.

Wash and Rinse
After soaking, remove the towels and place them into your washing machine. Add a small amount of liquid dish detergent, which will help break down any residual oils and grime. Wash on a hot cycle with an extra rinse to ensure all the ingredients are thoroughly removed.

Dry the Towels
Once washed, dry your towels on the highest heat setting your dryer allows. The heat helps to fluff up the fibers, restoring their softness. Alternatively, you can hang them outside in the sun, which can further help to whiten them naturally.

Serving and Storage Tips:

Softness Maintenance: To maintain your towels’ softness, avoid using fabric softeners, as they can create a waxy buildup that makes towels feel stiff. Instead, use white vinegar in the rinse cycle occasionally to keep them fluffy.

Storing Towels: Keep your freshly whitened towels in a cool, dry place to avoid mildew and musty odors. If you store them in a linen closet, consider using a linen spray to keep them smelling fresh.
