Introduction
Rats and mice are not only a nuisance but also potential carriers of disease and destruction in homes. From gnawed electrical wires to contaminated food, these little invaders can cause big problems. While there are numerous traps, poisons, and repellents on the market, many people are now looking for more natural, budget-friendly, and safe alternatives. One unexpected household item is gaining attention for its effectiveness in repelling rodents—regular toothpaste. Surprised? Here’s how to use this everyday item to help keep rats and mice away for good.

Ingredients
1 tablespoon of regular mint-flavored toothpaste

1 tablespoon of baking soda

1 tablespoon of flour or cornmeal

A few drops of peppermint oil (optional but enhances the effect)

Disposable gloves

Small container or bowl for mixing

Bottle caps or small shallow lids for placing the mixture

Instructions
Mix the ingredients: In a small bowl, combine the toothpaste, baking soda, and flour or cornmeal. Stir well until a thick paste forms. The minty smell of toothpaste and the texture of the flour make the mixture attractive to rodents, while the baking soda disrupts their digestive system.

Add peppermint oil (optional): A few drops can enhance the minty aroma, which is known to deter rodents. Be cautious, though—too much can make the scent overpowering and drive them away before they come into contact with the paste.

Portion the mixture: Using disposable gloves, scoop small amounts of the mixture into bottle caps or shallow lids. This makes it easier to place the bait and clean up afterward.

Place strategically: Put the caps in areas where you’ve noticed rodent activity—behind appliances, in cupboards, under the sink, along baseboards, or near entry points.

Monitor and refresh: Check the bait every few days. Replace any that has dried out or been consumed. Continue for 1-2 weeks or until signs of rodent activity cease.

Serving and Storage Tips
Do not store for long periods: This mixture is most effective when fresh. Make a small batch at a time and discard unused portions after a few days.

Keep out of reach of pets and children: While not highly toxic, it’s best to place this in areas inaccessible to curious hands and paws.
