Introduction: We’ve all experienced it—pulling what should be clean laundry out of the washer only to be met with a musty or sour smell. Towels are often the worst offenders, holding onto moisture and bacteria even after a spin through the machine. If you’re tired of using synthetic fragrances that only mask odors, this natural, easy trick will revolutionize your laundry routine. With just a few pantry staples, you can banish unpleasant smells and restore that fresh, clean scent to your clothes and towels.
Ingredients:
1 cup white distilled vinegar
½ cup baking soda
Optional: 5–10 drops of essential oil (lavender, lemon, or eucalyptus work well)
Instructions:
Load your musty towels or laundry into the washing machine.
Set the washer to the hottest water setting safe for the fabrics.
Add 1 cup of white vinegar directly into the drum of the washer (not the detergent dispenser).
Run a full wash cycle with no detergent.
After the vinegar cycle completes, sprinkle ½ cup of baking soda directly into the drum.
Run a second hot wash cycle.
For added scent, you can add a few drops of essential oil to a reusable dryer ball or small cloth before tossing the laundry into the dryer.
Serving and Storage Tips:
Always dry towels and laundry thoroughly after washing to prevent future odors.
Use wool dryer balls to speed up drying and naturally soften fabrics.
Store clean towels in a well-ventilated, dry space to maintain freshness.
