Introduction:
It started with a question—"My mother found this item in my father's drawer... Is this what I fear?" What she discovered was not a scandal, not a letter, but an old, handwritten recipe titled "His Favorite Midnight Snack." Folded and stained, the card held more than instructions for a meal—it held a piece of our family’s past. In the spirit of healing, mystery, and nostalgia, we recreated the dish that carried so much meaning. The result? A surprisingly comforting dish that blends the warmth of home with the intrigue of discovery.
Ingredients:
1 cup cooked jasmine rice
2 eggs
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 cup finely chopped scallions
1/4 cup chopped cooked bacon or smoked tofu (optional)
1/4 teaspoon chili flakes (optional)
Salt and pepper to taste
A dash of nostalgia (optional, but recommended)
Instructions:
Prep the eggs: Crack the eggs into a bowl, whisk lightly with a pinch of salt.
Heat the pan: In a large skillet or wok, heat sesame oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
Add rice: Toss in the cooked jasmine rice. Break up any clumps and let it fry for a few minutes to slightly crisp.
Season: Stir in soy sauce, sugar, chili flakes (if using), and mix well.
Add protein: If using bacon or tofu, add it now and let it warm through.
Egg magic: Push rice to the sides of the pan. Pour eggs into the center and scramble until just set, then mix into the rice.
Finish: Sprinkle scallions in and season with salt and pepper. Serve hot, with a side of wonder.
Serving and Storage Tips:
Best served warm, in a quiet room where stories can be shared.
Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days in the fridge. Reheat with a splash of water or soy sauce to revive its flavor.
Great for late-night cravings, or when the mood strikes for something both mysterious and familiar.
