Introduction
Over time, washing machines can develop unpleasant odors, stubborn grime, and a general feeling of being not-so-fresh. Many people immediately turn to vinegar for a deep clean — but what if there was an even cheaper, easier solution hiding right in your pantry? Forget vinegar! This clever home remedy costs just pennies and will leave your washing machine looking and smelling brand new. Plus, it’s safe, easy to use, and doesn’t leave behind that sharp vinegar scent.
Ingredients:
1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup washing soda (not the same as baking soda; available in most laundry aisles)
1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide (3%)
10 drops essential oil (optional, for scent — lemon, tea tree, or lavender work great)
Warm water
Instructions:
Mix the cleaning paste:
In a small bowl, combine the baking soda, washing soda, and hydrogen peroxide. Stir until a thick paste forms. Add essential oils if desired.
Apply the paste:
Using a clean cloth or sponge, apply the paste to the inside of the drum, around the door seal, and any visible grime spots. Pay extra attention to moldy or smelly areas.
Let it sit:
Allow the paste to sit for at least 15–30 minutes. This gives it time to break down residue, mold, and hard water deposits.
Run a cleaning cycle:
Set your machine to the hottest, longest cycle available. (Most washers have a “Tub Clean” or “Sanitize” cycle.)
Final wipe-down:
After the cycle finishes, wipe down the inside of the drum, the rubber gasket, and around the door with a clean microfiber cloth.
Leave the door open:
Prop the washer door open for a few hours to allow it to fully dry and prevent future odors.
Serving and Storage Tips:
Storage: If you make extra cleaning paste, store it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Stir before each use.
How often: For best results, deep-clean your machine with this method once every month.
Quick refresh: In between deep cleans, sprinkle a little baking soda directly into the drum and run a quick hot cycle.
