Introduction
Onions can take a lot of time to cook on the stovetop, but with a microwave, you can speed up the process while maintaining their delicious flavor and texture. Whether you're making a topping for burgers, an accompaniment for steak, or simply want to add some cooked onions to your favorite dish, this trick is perfect for anyone in a time crunch. It’s incredibly easy and takes just a couple of minutes!
Ingredients:
1 medium onion (white, yellow, or red depending on your preference)
1 tablespoon of butter or olive oil (optional)
Salt (to taste)
Pepper (to taste)
Optional: 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar or a pinch of sugar for extra sweetness
Preparation:
Peel and Slice: Start by peeling the onion and slicing it into thin rings or half-rings. The thinner you slice, the faster and more evenly they will cook.
Prepare the Microwave Safe Dish: Place the sliced onions in a microwave-safe bowl or dish. If you’re using butter or olive oil, add it to the dish and mix the onions to coat them evenly.
Season: Sprinkle salt and pepper to taste. If you want an added touch of sweetness, you can also drizzle balsamic vinegar or sprinkle a little sugar.
Microwave: Cover the bowl with a microwave-safe lid or a damp paper towel. Microwave on high for about 2 minutes. If you're microwaving a larger quantity, you may need to extend the time by 30-second increments. Stir halfway through for even cooking.
Check the Texture: After 2 minutes, the onions should be tender, soft, and lightly caramelized. If you prefer them to be softer or more caramelized, microwave for an additional 1 minute, checking every 30 seconds.
Serving and Storage Tips:
Serving Suggestions: These microwaved onions are perfect as a topping for burgers, steaks, hot dogs, or even on salads. They also pair wonderfully with roasted vegetables, in wraps, or atop a savory dish like pizza.
Storage: If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat them in the microwave for 30 seconds to a minute.
