Introduction
Toenail fungus, medically known as onychomycosis, is more than a cosmetic issue—it can cause discomfort, discoloration, and even nail loss if untreated. While pharmaceutical treatments exist, many people seek natural, gentle, and affordable alternatives. This article presents a simple DIY remedy using ingredients known for their antifungal and healing properties. With consistent application, this solution can help restore healthy, clear nails—without the harsh chemicals.
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar (with “the mother”)
2 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide (3% solution)
1 tablespoon baking soda
4–5 drops tea tree essential oil (antifungal and antiseptic)
4–5 drops lavender essential oil (optional but soothing)
1 small glass bowl
Cotton balls or Q-tips
Clean nail brush or toothbrush (optional)
Preparation:
In the glass bowl, combine the apple cider vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. The solution will lightly fizz—this is normal.
Stir in the baking soda until fully dissolved. The mixture should have a slightly gritty texture.
Add the tea tree oil and lavender oil. Mix gently to distribute the oils evenly.
How to Use:
Soak a cotton ball or Q-tip in the solution.
Gently clean the affected toenail(s), making sure to get under the nail tip and around the cuticle.
Let the solution sit on the nail for 10–15 minutes.
Rinse with warm water and dry thoroughly.
Repeat twice daily, preferably morning and evening, for at least 4–6 weeks or until the fungus is visibly gone.
For persistent cases, lightly file the top surface of the nail once or twice a week to allow deeper penetration.
Tips for Serving and Storing:
Store any leftover solution in a sealed glass container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Always shake or stir the mixture before each use to re-distribute the essential oils.
For hygiene, never double-dip applicators; use clean tools each time.
Trim affected nails regularly and wear breathable socks and shoes to prevent reinfection.
