Introduction:
It might sound odd—or even dangerous—to toss a ball of steel wool into your washing machine. But believe it or not, this unusual laundry hack is gaining popularity for one unexpected benefit: rust removal from water sources. In many households, especially those with older plumbing or high iron content in the water, laundry can come out with faint brownish stains. A piece of steel wool placed safely inside a mesh bag can help neutralize these effects. This article explains how it works, how to do it safely, and why it might just become your new laundry secret weapon.
Ingredients (Materials) Needed:
1 piece of fine-grade (0000) steel wool
1 mesh laundry bag or an old sock tied securely
Laundry detergent (your usual type)
Laundry load with light-colored or white fabrics (optional)
Preparation:
Choose the Right Steel Wool: Opt for fine-grade 0000 steel wool. Coarse varieties can be too abrasive and may leave metal fibers behind.
Pack the Steel Wool: Place the steel wool inside a mesh laundry bag or tie it securely in a clean old sock. This prevents any fragments from dispersing inside the machine.
Load the Machine: Add your laundry as usual. This method is best used with whites or items that have rust stains.
Add Detergent: Use your standard detergent. For added boost, you can also include a cup of white vinegar if tackling stubborn rust residue.
Wash Normally: Run your machine on a warm or hot cycle (unless clothing labels indicate cold only).
Serving and Storage Tips:
Do not reuse the same steel wool indefinitely. Replace it every few washes, especially if it starts to degrade or rust heavily.
Keep unused steel wool dry and stored in an airtight container to prevent premature rusting.
Do not use this method on dark clothes unless you’ve tested it first, as metal oxidation can cause light discoloration in rare cases.
