Introduction:
Mosquitoes are not only an annoying nuisance, but they can also carry dangerous diseases. Instead of resorting to harmful chemicals or expensive store-bought repellents, why not try a creative and eco-friendly method? By combining simple household items like an egg carton and carnation flowers, you can create a natural mosquito shield for your outdoor space. Not only is this method effective, but it’s also an environmentally conscious way to keep pesky bugs at bay.
Ingredients:
1 egg carton (preferably made from recycled paper)
2-3 fresh carnation flowers (you can use any color, but red, pink, or white work especially well)
Essential oil (optional, but citronella, lavender, or eucalyptus work best for mosquitoes)
Scissors (to cut the egg carton)
Preparation:
Begin by taking an empty, clean egg carton. Cut the carton into sections, creating small individual cups. These will act as the bases for your mosquito shields.
Take the carnations and carefully remove the flower heads. If you prefer, you can cut the stems and place them directly into the cups. If you’re adding essential oils, now’s the time to place a few drops inside each egg carton section to enhance the scent.
Arrange the carnation flower heads into each of the cups. If you’ve used essential oils, the flowers will absorb the fragrance, which will help repel mosquitoes. You can also mix in a few dried herbs (such as lavender) to add an extra layer of protection.
Allow the flowers to sit in the sun for a few hours to help activate the natural oils and fragrances. This process will enhance their mosquito-repelling properties.
Place your completed mosquito shields around your patio, garden, or any outdoor area where you want to deter mosquitoes. The carnations’ natural oils and pleasant scent will ward off the bugs, and the egg carton ensures easy portability.
Serving and Storage Tips:
To make the most of your mosquito shields, place them in areas with plenty of mosquito activity, such as near standing water or areas with high humidity.
If you want to extend the life of your shields, you can add more drops of essential oil as the fragrance fades. Keep the shields in a dry, cool place when not in use.
While carnations typically last around 3-5 days, you can replace them with fresh ones when needed.
