Introduction
Hair fall and slow hair growth are common concerns for many. Natural remedies often provide gentle yet effective solutions, and one such remedy is onion hair oil. Onion is rich in sulfur, which boosts collagen production and strengthens hair roots, promoting healthier, thicker hair. Making your own onion hair oil at home is simple and cost-effective, and it allows you to avoid harsh chemicals found in commercial products. In this article, you will learn how to prepare this nourishing oil, tips for use, and variations to customize it for your hair type.
Ingredients
2 medium-sized onions (preferably red or white)
1 cup coconut oil or olive oil (you can also use almond or castor oil)
Optional: 1 tablespoon curry leaves or fenugreek seeds for added benefits
Optional: A few drops of essential oils like rosemary or lavender for fragrance
Preparation
Extract Onion Juice:
Peel the onions and chop them into small pieces.
Using a blender or grater, puree the onions until smooth.
Strain the puree through a fine mesh or cheesecloth to extract the juice. Set aside.
Infuse the Oil:
In a clean pan, heat the chosen carrier oil on low heat.
Add the optional curry leaves or fenugreek seeds if using, and sauté for a few minutes until fragrant.
Pour in the onion juice and mix well.
Simmer the mixture on low heat for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
Remove from heat and allow the oil to cool completely.
Strain and Store:
Once cooled, strain the oil through a fine sieve or muslin cloth to remove onion residues.
Transfer the oil into a clean, airtight glass bottle.
Serving and Storage Tips
Use the onion oil by massaging it gently into your scalp and hair roots. Leave it on for at least 1-2 hours or overnight for maximum benefits before washing it off with a mild shampoo.
For best results, apply the oil 2-3 times a week.
Store the oil in a cool, dark place. It can last for up to 3 weeks when refrigerated.
Always do a patch test before the first use to check for any allergic reactions.
