Introduction
I’ve made “Amish Winter Bliss” three times this week, and every single time, friends and family keep asking for more! This warm, comforting dish perfectly captures the spirit of cozy winter gatherings with its rich, hearty flavors and a hint of sweetness. Rooted in traditional Amish cooking, this recipe blends simple, wholesome ingredients into a dish that feels like a warm hug on a chilly day. Whether you’re serving it for a holiday feast or a casual family dinner, Amish Winter Bliss is guaranteed to become a new favorite in your recipe collection.
Ingredients:
4 cups diced potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet work well)
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 cups cooked ham, diced (or substitute with smoked sausage)
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons butter
Salt and pepper to taste
1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
2 green onions, thinly sliced for garnish
Preparation:
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Cook the potatoes: Boil the diced potatoes in salted water until just tender but not falling apart, about 8-10 minutes. Drain well and set aside.
Sauté onions and ham: In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Add diced ham and cook for another 3 minutes to blend flavors.
Mix the base: In a large bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, salt, pepper, and smoked paprika if using. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese.
Combine all: Gently fold in the cooked potatoes, sautéed onions, and ham into the creamy cheese mixture until everything is evenly coated.
Bake: Transfer the mixture to a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Spread evenly and bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes, until bubbly and golden on top.
Serving and Storage Tips:
Serve warm, garnished with fresh green onions for a pop of color and freshness.
This dish pairs beautifully with steamed green beans or a crisp winter salad to balance the richness.
Leftovers keep well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in the oven or microwave until warmed through.
For make-ahead convenience, prepare the dish and refrigerate before baking; add an extra 5-10 minutes to baking time when ready to serve.
