Introduction
Mashed potato puffs are golden, crispy bites of comfort that transform humble mashed potatoes into irresistible finger food. Perfect as a snack, appetizer, or side dish, these puffs combine creamy mashed potatoes with a crunchy exterior, creating a delightful texture contrast. Easy to make and endlessly customizable, mashed potato puffs are a crowd-pleaser for all ages and occasions.
Ingredients:
2 cups mashed potatoes (preferably chilled and firm)
1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite blend)
1/4 cup finely chopped green onions or chives
1/4 cup cooked bacon bits (optional)
1 large egg, beaten
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1 cup breadcrumbs (panko works great for extra crispiness)
Vegetable oil (for frying)
Preparation:
Prepare the Mixture:
In a large bowl, combine the mashed potatoes, shredded cheese, green onions, bacon bits (if using), beaten egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until all ingredients are well incorporated.
Shape the Puffs:
Using your hands or a spoon, scoop about a tablespoon-sized portion of the mixture and roll it into a smooth ball. Then gently flatten it to form a small patty or puff shape.
Coat the Puffs:
Place the breadcrumbs in a shallow dish. Roll each potato puff in the breadcrumbs, pressing lightly to ensure they stick evenly.
Fry to Perfection:
Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or frying pan over medium heat. When hot, carefully add the puffs, frying them in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry each side for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
Drain and Serve:
Remove the puffs with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Suggestions for Presentation and Conservation:
Presentation: Serve your mashed potato puffs warm with dipping sauces like sour cream, spicy ketchup, garlic aioli, or ranch dressing. Garnish with fresh herbs such as parsley or additional chopped chives for a pop of color and flavor.
Conservation: These puffs are best enjoyed fresh and hot. However, you can store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To reheat, bake them in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 10 minutes to restore their crispiness, or briefly fry them again.
