Introduction
Gnats and fruit flies are a common nuisance, especially during the warmer months when fruits ripen and moisture abounds. These tiny pests can invade your kitchen, dining areas, and anywhere food or dampness exists. While they don’t cause direct harm, their presence is irritating and unsanitary. The good news? You can tackle them easily with a few natural and inexpensive remedies.
Ingredients (What You Need)
Apple cider vinegar (or white vinegar)
Dish soap (a few drops)
A small bowl or jar
Plastic wrap (optional)
Overripe fruit (optional)
Clean spray bottle with water
Essential oils like peppermint or eucalyptus (optional)
Preparation (How to Make a Simple Fruit Fly Trap)
Pour about 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar into the bowl or jar.
Add 2–3 drops of dish soap and gently stir. The soap breaks the surface tension, trapping the flies.
Optionally, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and poke a few small holes to let flies in but not out.
Place the trap near fruit bowls, trash cans, or areas where you’ve noticed gnats or fruit flies.
For gnats that are attracted to moisture, keep surfaces dry and clean, and spray plants lightly with water mixed with a few drops of dish soap.
Serving and Storage Tips
Replace the vinegar trap every few days or when it becomes full of trapped flies.
Clean kitchen counters regularly and keep fruit in sealed containers or in the fridge.
Dispose of overripe or rotting fruit immediately to avoid attracting more pests.
Store food waste in sealed bins and take out the trash frequently.
