Introduction
There’s nothing more refreshing than a strong, steady stream of water in your shower — except when your shower head gets clogged, and the pressure drops to a sad trickle. This common household annoyance can turn your daily routine into a frustrating experience. My grandpa, a practical man with years of home-fixing wisdom, always had a simple yet highly effective trick to unclog shower head holes and restore that powerful water flow. The best part? It uses items you probably already have at home and takes only minutes. Let me share his secret with you!
Ingredients (What You’ll Need)
White vinegar (1 cup)
A plastic bag (ziplock or any small, sturdy bag)
A rubber band or twist tie
An old toothbrush or a small scrub brush
Warm water
Needle or pin (optional, for stubborn holes)
Soft cloth or towel
Preparation
Remove the Shower Head (Optional):
If your shower head is easy to unscrew, removing it will allow a deeper clean. If not, no worries — the vinegar bag method works just as well when it’s attached.
Vinegar Soak in a Bag:
Fill the plastic bag with enough white vinegar to submerge the shower head’s holes. Attach the bag securely around the shower head using a rubber band or twist tie. Make sure the holes are completely submerged in the vinegar.
Soak Time:
Let it soak for at least 1 to 2 hours. For heavy buildup, overnight soaking works wonders. The vinegar gently dissolves mineral deposits like calcium and lime that clog the holes.
Scrub Away Residue:
After soaking, remove the bag and use the toothbrush or small brush to scrub the shower head gently. Focus on the holes to remove loosened deposits.
Clear Individual Holes:
For any stubborn clogged holes, carefully poke them with a needle or pin to clear the blockage.
Rinse and Dry:
Run warm water through the shower head to flush out any vinegar and debris. Wipe the surface with a soft cloth to dry and polish.
Reattach (If Removed):
Screw the shower head back on tightly and test the water pressure.
Serving and Storage Tips
Test your shower water pressure immediately after cleaning. You should notice a significant improvement in flow.
Repeat this cleaning every 3-6 months to maintain peak shower performance.
Store leftover vinegar sealed tightly for future use — it’s great for many other household cleaning tasks!
