Introduction
Bedbugs are tiny, nocturnal pests that have plagued humans for centuries. Despite their small size, these insects can cause significant discomfort due to their bites and their ability to infest homes rapidly. Understanding how bedbugs live and thrive is key to effectively eliminating them. This article will explore the lifecycle and habits of bedbugs and share a straightforward, effective method to eradicate them from your living space.
How Do Bedbugs Live?
Bedbugs are parasitic insects that feed exclusively on the blood of warm-blooded animals, with humans as their preferred hosts. They are most active at night, hiding during the day in cracks, crevices, mattresses, bed frames, furniture, and behind wallpaper. Their flattened bodies allow them to squeeze into tight spaces, making detection difficult.
A female bedbug can lay hundreds of eggs in her lifetime, which hatch in about 6 to 10 days. Nymphs (young bedbugs) molt several times before becoming adults, feeding on blood at every stage. Without a blood meal, bedbugs can survive for months, which contributes to their persistence.

Preparation: The Simple Method to Eradicate Bedbugs
-
Identify Infested Areas
Carefully inspect your bedroom and other suspected areas. Look for small reddish stains on bedding, tiny dark spots (bedbug feces), shed skins, or live bugs. -
Vacuum Thoroughly
Use the vacuum cleaner with the crevice tool to clean mattresses, bed frames, furniture, carpets, and cracks. Dispose of the vacuum bag or empty the canister immediately into a sealed plastic bag and throw it outside. -
Wash and Dry Fabrics
Remove all bedding, curtains, and washable fabrics. Wash them in hot water (at least 60°C/140°F) and dry on the highest heat setting to kill eggs and bugs. -
Steam Clean Non-Washables
Use a steamer on mattresses, furniture, and baseboards. Bedbugs and their eggs cannot survive the high temperature of steam (above 45°C/113°F). -
Apply Diatomaceous Earth
Lightly dust bedbug hiding spots (baseboards, cracks, behind furniture) with food-grade diatomaceous earth. This natural powder damages the bug’s exoskeleton, causing dehydration and death. -
Seal Mattresses and Pillows
Encase mattresses and pillows in special bedbug-proof covers to trap any surviving bugs and prevent new infestations. -
Repeat Treatment
Bedbugs are hardy and may require repeating the cleaning and treatment process every 7 to 10 days for at least a month.
Serving and Storage Tips
-
Keep your home clutter-free to minimize hiding spots for bedbugs.
-
Regularly inspect beds and furniture, especially after traveling or guests.
-
Maintain encasements and vacuum regularly.
-
Avoid bringing second-hand furniture into your home unless thoroughly inspected and treated.
