Introduction:
Dealing with insects, bugs, and pests in and around your home can be frustrating, especially if you want to avoid harsh chemicals found in commercial repellents. Fortunately, nature provides powerful ingredients that are safe for humans and pets while keeping unwanted pests at bay. This simple, all-natural remedy is easy to make, environmentally friendly, and surprisingly effective.
Ingredients:
-
2 cups distilled water
-
2 tablespoons witch hazel or rubbing alcohol
-
15 drops citronella essential oil
-
10 drops eucalyptus essential oil
-
10 drops tea tree essential oil
-
5 drops lavender essential oil (optional, for scent and added insect-repelling properties)
-
1 spray bottle (preferably dark-colored to preserve the oils)
Preparation:
-
In a small mixing bowl or directly in the spray bottle, combine the distilled water and witch hazel (or rubbing alcohol).
-
Add all essential oils one by one, shaking gently to combine after each addition.
-
Transfer the mixture into your spray bottle if not already done.
-
Shake well before each use to redistribute the oils evenly.
Serving and Storage Tips:
-
Store the spray in a cool, dark place to maintain potency.
-
Shake well before each application as natural oils tend to separate from water.
-
Use within 3–6 months for maximum effectiveness.
-
Spray around window sills, door frames, outdoor seating areas, and on clothes or skin (avoid eyes and mouth).
-
Always do a patch test before applying to skin to avoid allergic reactions.
