Once, while working at a fast food restaurant, I discovered a woman’s Louis Vuitton handbag on the table. After waiting for twenty minutes, I decided to take it to the lost and found office because I knew it wouldn’t be coming back. I simply put it down and went back to work without looking inside.
Even after a month, no one had come to claim the bag. “Hey, it’s been a month… do you want this bag?” my boss asked casually. After some thought, I decided I did, so I went to pick it up. When I opened it, I was surprised to see that it contained nothing but a single piece of paper. One of the handwritten notes read: “For the girl who needed a new handbag for the holidays.”
“The piece of paper was a receipt. When I looked closer at the ticket, I saw that the bag had cost
$1,700! It looked like the woman had intended to leave the bag for someone in need—a thoughtful act of kindness—whoever that was. I secretly put all my stuff in the bag and went home without telling anyone about my find. I felt safer and looked more polished at interviews because of this bag; it was more than just an accessory. Even now I own this bag. This keepsake is a precious memento of my less fortunate days. The most important thing is that it motivates me to give back and help other people whenever I can.
