The “Secret Sauce” That Transformed My Meals All Week

You know that one scene in The Little Mermaid, where Ariel swims off to admire her shelves upon shelves of thingamabobs? That’s pretty similar to me whenever I open my fridge to survey my various jams, preserves, and spreads. At the time of writing, I have seven at the ready, but one new jar in particular has rapidly been swiped clean: Bonne Maman’s Concord Grape Fruit Spread (or BMCGFS, for short).

If you’ve been dreaming of the day when grape jellies/jams/spreads would actually taste like, well, grapes, you’ll be glad to know that day is finally here. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself more than happy to have a PB&J for dinner this week.

This is largely due to it being technically a spread (rather than a jam or jelly, which both feature less actual fruit

Bright and tart, this spread distills the experience of eating a fresh Concord grape (or those “jam grapes” that can be found at the grocery store); it’s lightly sweet and jammy, has a zippy pucker from the lemon juice, and even a little bit of a floral moment.

This is, as far as I can remember, not like any other jam or jelly hanging out in my elementary school PB&Js. It makes for a sandwich that deserves to be eaten with a pinky up, and perhaps a monocle. Am I about to buy a railroad? I just might be.
