The thyroid gland – a key regulator of health

The thyroid gland plays a vital role in the body’s overall health. It produces hormones that control energy consumption and affect nearly every organ. A malfunctioning thyroid gland can cause a variety of symptoms, from constant fatigue to digestive issues. Diet is one of the factors that most significantly impacts thyroid function.

How the thyroid gland works

Located at the front of the neck, covering the trachea, the thyroid gland produces two main hormones: T3 and T4, the synthesis of which requires iodine. These hormones are the “switches” of metabolism: they influence breathing, heart rate, brain activity, motor skills, sleep, and even the digestive system and the function of other glands.

  • Hormonal deficiency  slows metabolism by up to 40%, leading to lethargy and weight gain.

  • Excess  speeds up the process by 60-100%, which also creates problems.

The most common disorder is hypothyroidism, often associated with Hashimoto’s syndrome.

The three main enemies: foods that the thyroid gland “cannot tolerate”

1. Gluten – the hidden saboteur

Gluten is the collective name for the proteins in wheat, barley, and rye. It gives dough its elasticity, but:

  • It contains the protein  gliadin  , which often causes thyroid problems.

  • It is present in many processed foods where it is not expected (sauces, ketchup, salad dressings).
